What is 17-0?

The perfect-season NFL draft game — and how the simulation actually works.

17-0 is a free browser game built around one question: could you assemble a team that never loses? Only one NFL team has ever finished a season without a loss. The 1972 Miami Dolphins went 14-0 in the regular season and then won all three of their playoff games, including Super Bowl VII, for a 17-0 record counting the postseason. The game lets you try to match that with players drawn from every era of pro football history, not just one roster from one season.

Each game, you spin for a random franchise and era, draft one legend from that spin, and repeat until all 10 starting positions are filled. Then the game simulates a full 17-game regular season plus the playoffs if you win at least 9 games, and tells you your record. The playoff run is four rounds, or three if you win 14 or more games and earn a first-round bye. Go 17-0 and you've matched what the 1972 Dolphins did.

How the simulation works

Your result isn't random — it's deterministic. The same 10-player roster produces the same record every time. Three things determine your team strength score:

Weighted rating. Every player has a rating. Not all positions count equally toward your score — quarterback carries the most weight, followed by the pass rush and offensive line.

Chemistry. If your quarterback and a receiver or tight end actually played together — same team, same era — you get a bonus. A Hall of Fame roster with no such connection can score lower than a slightly-less-decorated team that has one.

Weak-link penalty. Your lowest-rated starter matters more than your highest-rated one. A single below-average player at any position drags the whole simulation down.

Want the full breakdown? The Simulation Guide describes the simulation in detail, including how each factor feeds into your team strength score.

Game modes

Classic is the standard mode — ratings and accolades visible during the draft. Pro Scout hides all of that, so you're drafting mostly on name, team and era (the chemistry badge still shows). Daily Eye Test is a once-a-day challenge: everyone gets the same spin sequence with Pro Scout forced on, so results are directly comparable on the daily leaderboard. Challenge Mode removes respins entirely. It unlocks after you finish your first game.

After any result, you can send a Head-to-Head challenge to a friend — they draft their own roster and the game compares records directly, rather than just posting a score to a feed.

Who makes 17-0

17-0 is made and operated by Try Hard Studios LLC, a small independent studio based in California. It started as a fan project: a way to argue about the greatest players and teams in football history and then actually test those arguments, instead of just debating them. The game is free to play and is supported by advertising.

17-0 is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the NFL or any team. Team and player names are used only to identify the players in the game. If you spot a rating that looks wrong, a bug, or a factual error in our articles, we want to hear about it: see the contact page or email contact@perfect170.com.

How the game is built

17-0 is a single-page web app written in plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript that runs in your browser. The draft, ratings and season simulation all run on your device. Leaderboards, optional saved streaks and optional daily reminders use a hosted database, as described in the Privacy Policy. The full simulation logic is explained in the Simulation Guide, and the How to Play page covers the rules. We also publish articles on football history written to go with the game.

Frequently asked questions

Is 17-0 affiliated with the NFL?
No. 17-0 is an independent fan project, not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the NFL or any of its member clubs. Player names and historical statistics are used for entertainment purposes only.
Is it free?
Yes. 17-0 is free to play in the browser, no account required.
What data does the game collect?
Gameplay state — streak, game count, theme — is stored locally in your browser. After every game, your anonymous player ID, optional display name, streak, best streak, perfect-season count, games played and last-played date are sent to our leaderboard database. If you opt into daily reminders, we store your browser's push subscription (endpoint and keys) with your player ID and display name. If you choose to save your streak, an email address is stored for that purpose. Full details are in the Privacy Policy.
Why did my team of Hall of Famers lose?
Cross-era, cross-team rosters earn zero chemistry bonus and often carry a weak-link penalty. The simulation gives a chemistry bonus when your quarterback and a wide receiver or tight end come from the same franchise and era, so a pile of stars from different teams and eras can score lower than a smaller group with that kind of connection.
How often does the Daily Eye Test change?
Once every 24 hours. Everyone who plays that day gets the identical spin sequence, so the daily leaderboard is a fair comparison.
