How to Play

How to Play 17-0

Assemble a roster of pro football legends from across every era, then simulate a full season to find out if your team can do the near-impossible: finish a perfect 17-0.

The Basics

17-0 is a free browser game about building the greatest pro football team in history. There is nothing to install and no account required — you can start drafting the moment the page loads, and a full game takes about two minutes.

The name comes from the one number every football fan understands. A modern pro season is 17 games; going 17-0 means a flawless run with no losses. It has only ever been seriously threatened once in the modern era, when the 2007 New England Patriots went 16-0 in the regular season before falling in the Super Bowl. That near-miss is the whole point of this game: everyone knows how hard perfection is, and 17-0 lets you chase it by assembling an all-time roster and testing it against a full schedule.

The Roster: 10 Legends, Offense and Defense

You draft ten players over ten rounds, one per position, building a complete two-way roster rather than just a fantasy offense:

Every player is drawn from a real franchise and a real era, from pre-merger legends to current stars. Your job is to weld players from completely different teams and decades — a quarterback from one dynasty, a pass rusher from another — into one roster that could run the table.

Playing a Round

Step 1

Spin for a team and era

Each round, the game spins to a random franchise-and-era combination and shows you that team's standout players from that window.

Step 2

Draft into an open position

Pick one player from the spin and slot them into a position you still need. You can filter each spin by the position you're missing, or take the best player available and build around them.

Step 3

Spend your two respins wisely

You get two respins per game. If a round offers nothing you want, you can reroll — but only twice, so save them for when every option is genuinely weak.

Step 4

Simulate the season

Once all ten picks are in, the game plays out a 17-game regular season, then a playoff run if you qualify — and tells you whether you went a perfect 17-0.

How Scoring Works

The result is not random. Every player carries a hidden rating that reflects how dominant they were at their peak, and the season engine combines those ratings into a single team strength that drives your win probability in each game. Four things decide whether you run the table.

Positional value — some spots matter more

Your team strength is a position-weighted average, not a flat one. A generational quarterback or a game-wrecking pass rusher moves the needle far more than an average starter at a low-leverage spot. The weights the engine actually uses:

PositionWeight
Quarterback (QB)2.5×
Edge Rusher (EDGE)1.5×
Offensive Line (OL)1.4×
Wide Receiver (WR)1.3×
Defensive Tackle (DT)1.2×
Cornerback (CB)1.2×
Tight End (TE)1.1×
Running Back (RB)1.0×
Linebacker (LB)0.9×
Safety (S)0.9×

Quarterback is by far the most important pick, followed by the pass rush and the offensive line. Getting an all-time great at a premium position is worth chasing.

The weak-link penalty — balance beats stars

A team is only as strong as its softest starter. The engine applies a penalty for your lowest-rated player: it is gentle for players rated 87 to 90, then steep for anyone below 87. Loading up on three superstars while ignoring your secondary leaves a hole that good opponents exploit. Going 17-0 rewards a balanced roster with no obvious weakness far more than a top-heavy one.

Chemistry — build a real unit

Rosters that fit together get a small edge. If your quarterback shares a team and era with your wide receiver or tight end, the engine adds a chemistry bonus (up to a cap). The best teams in football history weren't just collections of talent — they were built to complement each other.

The win curve — why the last wins are the hardest

Team strength converts into a per-game win probability, and that probability compounds across 17 games. Even a very strong roster that wins, say, 88% of individual games is unlikely to win all 17 in a row — which is exactly why a perfect season is rare. Every additional win gets harder because you have to keep stringing them together.

Results are deterministic. The same ten players always produce the same season. The outcome is seeded from your exact roster, so a perfect run is repeatable and verifiable — replay the identical roster and you'll get the identical record.

Reading Your Result

After the simulation, your season lands in one of several tiers based on your record and how far you advance in the playoffs (nine or more wins makes the playoffs; fourteen or more earns a first-round bye):

ResultWhat it means
17-0The Perfect Season — the rarest outcome in the game
ChampionsWon it all, but dropped at least one regular-season game
Title-game lossElite team that came up one game short
Playoff exitContender or playoff-bound, knocked out earlier
Missed the playoffsA strong-but-not-enough season under nine wins
